If you choose to host a story thread, you must choose what type of difficulty and level of silliness you want it to have. Here are several modes you can use as referance when coming up with rules for your story:
Absolute Chaos
Any thing goes here as long as it does not break site rules. Want it to rain gumdrops all of sudden? Yes! Should you expect a plot and complex characters? Er...Probably not.
Kinda Random
This grand tale has a plot, characters with at least some personality, and writers should try and be mindful of the direction the story is going in. It is still a random mess though, and absurdity is still welcome and encouraged. (An example would be a tale about a robot traveling through Candy Land to find a portal back to his home planet.)
Improvise Wisely
The writers must try their best to develop a decent plot and good characters with strong personalities. Writers are encouraged to try a bit harder than they would with a "Kinda Random Story" and actually think carefully as they write something. They are still allowed to goof off though, but they must do so in a way that won't make the story too absurd or random.
Winging it with Great Skill
The most advanced option. Writers must take this story very seriously becuase they must try their best to make the story as complex, well thought out, and intricate as an improvised story could possibley hope to be. There is no goofing off here, this is 100% serious!
